In the sermon, the cleric spoke about Akwa Ibom children who ought to be in school but are instead trapped in menial domestic work. He also highlighted a culture of infighting, pull-him-down tendencies, excessive pride, and a mindset that celebrates proximity to power rather than productivity. Federal High Court voids PDP’s Ibadan National Convention

A Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan has nullified the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) National Convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, on 15 November 2025.

In its ruling, the court barred members of the Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC) from parading themselves as national officers of the party.

The court further held that the Caretaker Committee led by Mohammed Abdulrahman and Senator Samuel Anyanwu remains the only recognised National Working Committee of the PDP, pending the conduct of a valid national convention.

It will be recalled that Tanimu Turaki, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, emerged as the PDP National Chairman after a tense and highly controversial national convention in Ibadan.

Police intercept bus, recover 415 cartridges, arrest suspects in A’Ibom

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has recorded another major operational success with the recovery of a large cache of live ammunition and the arrest of a suspect, as well as two commuters accused of obstructing lawful police duties.

According to the Command, the operation took place on 23 January 2026 at about 11:00 p.m., when operatives on routine stop-and-search patrol along the Calabar–Itu Highway intercepted a commercial bus with registration number ARR 600 ZY, travelling towards Calabar.

A thorough search of the vehicle led to the recovery of a carton containing 415 live cartridges. The bus was driven by one Ikenna, with several passengers on board.

Judge permits Yahaya Bello to observe Ramadan in Mecca

The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, permission to travel to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, to perform the lesser hajj (Umrah) and observe the final 10 days of Ramadan, despite his ongoing trial.

Justice Emeka Nwite granted the application on Thursday after Bello’s counsel, Joseph Daudu (SAN), moved a motion seeking the temporary release of his client’s international passport.

Daudu informed the court that the application, dated 19 January, was filed on 20 January. He said the motion sought an order allowing Bello to travel to Mecca for the lesser hajj during Ramadan, which runs from 18 February to 19 March, and to observe the concluding days of the fasting period in the holy city.

Counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Kemi Pinheiro (SAN), did not oppose the application.

Seadogs demand state policing, security decentralisation

The National Association of Seadogs (NAS), Pyrates Confraternity, Atlantic Shores Deck, Eket Chapter, has called for the urgent decentralisation of Nigeria’s security architecture to enable states to establish and manage their own policing structures.

The President of the association, Cap’n Idongesit Ifon, made the call in a statement issued to journalists on Thursday in Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

According to Ifon, Nigeria’s highly centralised policing framework has become inadequate for addressing local security challenges across communities.

The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC) has challenged the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court sitting in Yenagoa in a suit contesting Shell UK PLC’s divestment from its onshore and shallow-water oil and gas assets.

The plaintiffs allege that the divestment did not comply with the guidelines stipulated in the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021.

The suit was filed by the traditional ruler of Ekpetiama Kingdom in Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, King Bubaraiye Dakolo. He is also seeking redress and environmental remediation over what he described as 40 years of cumulative pollution in his domain.
