Man bags life in prison for kidnapping A’Ibom judge

A Federal High Court in Uyo has sentenced 30-year-old Nkereuwem Felix Effiong to life imprisonment for his role in the abduction of a judge of the Akwa Ibom State High Court, Hon. Justice Joy Unwana.

Effiong was convicted on three of four counts, including conspiracy, membership of a terrorist group, and kidnapping under the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

Justice Unwana was kidnapped on December 18, 2023, alongside her driver, Idorenyin Ekanem, along the Okobo–Esuk Inwang–Ndon Ebom Road in Akwa Ibom State. They were held captive for five days. During the attack, the judge’s police orderly, ThankGod Ekanem, was shot dead.

Uwem Imo Ita, met in Uyo to draw up a fresh list of executives without consulting key stakeholders from Mkpat Enin.

The move reportedly contradicted an earlier resolution reached by party leaders in the area to retain the existing ward and chapter executives for another four-year term, citing their loyalty and performance.

Police arrest armed robbery suspect, recover firearm in Uyo

The suspect is currently in police custody, while investigations are ongoing to arrest other fleeing gang members and recover additional weapons. He will be charged in court upon the conclusion of the investigation.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to ridding Akwa Ibom State of criminal elements and ensuring the safety of lives and property.

Ijaw elders endorse Kio, Ebiseni, Benamaisia for INC national positions

Ijaw elders from the Central Zone of the Ijaw National Congress (INC) have passed a vote of confidence on three principal officers of the National Representative Council (NRC), endorsing their aspirations in the forthcoming national executive elections.

The NRC, the legislative arm of the INC, serves as a check on the National Executive Committee.

In a statement issued over the weekend following a well-attended interactive session, the elders commended the performance of His Royal Highness, Dr Anyanate Kio, Leader of the House; Princess Joyce Adesola Ebiseni, Deputy Leader; and Elder Gabriel Pinssidor Benamaisia, Clerk of the House. All three are seeking election into the national executive offices of the Congress.

A’Ibom court sentences factional village head, two others to death over murder

Evidence before the court showed that the faction associated with the defendants eventually gained dominance in the village.

They assumed control of the administration and unilaterally determined how palm fruits would be harvested. To consolidate their authority, they hired security guards from Ikot Itie Udung, a neighbouring community.

The guards, placed under the supervision of the third convict, Ubong Udo Okpon, were reportedly paid ₦25,000 monthly.

The defendants’ extrajudicial statements, admitted in evidence as Exhibits 3 and 5 without objection, confirmed these arrangements.
