Niger Delta groups demand cleanup before divestment

Environmental and civil society groups have accused oil companies of abandoning decades of pollution in the Niger Delta as multinational firms divest from onshore operations without adequately addressing environmental damage.
Ahead of the fifth Niger Delta Alternatives Convergence (NDAC) scheduled for 14 May in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, the Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF) said nearly 70 years of oil and gas extraction had left the region with devastated ecosystems, polluted rivers, destroyed farmlands and contaminated drinking water.

Tegbe outlines five-point power reform plan

Power Minister-designate Joseph Tegbe told the Senate that fixing Nigeria’s electricity crisis will require coordinated reforms across gas supply, grid stability, distribution, metering and financial discipline, not an unrealistic three-month promise to end grid collapses.
Appearing before the Senate on 6 May following his nomination by President Bola Tinubu as Minister of Power, Tegbe said there was no quick fix to the country’s deep-rooted electricity challenges, but assured Nigerians that visible improvements could begin within the shortest possible time.

Police raid A’Ibom community hideout, recover guns

A suspected criminal hideout in Obot Akara Local Government Area has been raided by the Akwa Ibom State Police Command, leading to the arrest of one suspect and the recovery of firearms and ammunition.
The operation, carried out on 11 May 2026 at about 9:30am, followed credible intelligence that Aniefiok Otong Mbana of Ikot Ukam Village, Obot Akara, was in possession of a motorcycle suspected to have been stolen.

Court jails man nine years for money laundering in Lagos

Justice Daniel Osiagor of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, on Monday, May 11, 2026, convicted and sentenced Taofeek Daniel Oriola to nine years imprisonment for money laundering.

Oriola was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Lagos Zonal Directorate 1, Ikoyi, on three counts bordering on money laundering and concealment of proceeds of unlawful activities.

Police arrest suspected truck looters on Calabar-Itu highway

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested suspected vandals involved in the looting and theft of items from an accidented truck along the Calabar–Itu Highway.

On 10 May 2026, at about 22:00 hours, operatives of the command acted swiftly on credible intelligence provided by a tricycle operator regarding the activities of criminal elements vandalising and stealing from a truck that had fallen into a valley at Afaha along the Calabar–Itu Highway.

A’Ibom community leaders demand EMOIMEE fund probe

Tension is mounting in Esit Eket Local Government Area as leaders of thought, traditional rulers, political leaders, women, youths, and community stakeholders convened at the palace of the Paramount Ruler of Esit Eket, His Royal Majesty Edidem Ubong Peter Assam II, in Akpautong Village.

They issued a stern seven-day ultimatum to representatives of Esit Eket in the Seplat/NNPC JV EMOIMEE Host Community Development Trust (HCDT) to account for the management of community funds, scholarships and empowerment programmes over the past four years.

Counsel to Opu Nembe Kingdom, Barrister Chigozie Inwere, has criticised Aiteo’s resort to what he described as technicalities and frivolous interlocutory appeals to delay justice in the kingdom’s over N122 billion oil pollution suit.

The Opu Nembe Kingdom in Nembe and Brass Local Government Areas of Bayelsa State is seeking legal redress over environmental damage allegedly caused by oil spills from Oil Mining Lease (OML) 29 in 2019 and 2020.

Police nab two suspected arms suppliers in Ikot Ekpene

Operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have arrested two suspected arms suppliers and recovered a locally made revolver pistol in Ikot Ekpene as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks and curb illegal arms proliferation in the state.

The suspects, identified as Udeme Udo, 52, and Nkereuwem Udo, 40, were arrested on 8 May 2026 at about 4:25 am following credible intelligence.
